In April 2005, Bea Nettles was the von Hess Visiting Artist at the Borowsky Center for Publication Arts at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. During her residency, with the help of the gifted staff and graduate students, she produced a new artists book, The Observer. This small palm-sized book has photographs of Nettles every decade, from a girl of ten to a woman in her fifties. The eyes are cut out to reveal alternately the young eyes in the older face, then the older eyes in the younger face. It is a humorous, jarring, but truthful study of the process of aging.
