In 1990, Nettles was contacted by a Japanese designer to create a promotional campaign for his fall fashions. After she saw the runway show in Paris, she requested to shoot in the hill town of Assisi, Italy. She was allowed to choose her own models and created hand colored portraits based on the Tarot cards.
