This book contains images that evoke particular places, composed of photographs I have taken on multiple visits, using flashbacks and glimpses of other parts of the world that cause me to reminisce. The journey begins at my home in the Midwest and moves on to Italy, returns to North Carolina, dips south to Georgia, and then the beaches and freshwater lakes of my childhood in Florida. Along the way I visit places that stay fixed in my mind, spaces that become pivotal, from the horizon of the prairie, lake, and ocean’s edge to the wave-like curving ceilings of the Mosque at Cordoba.Combined with my images are poems written by my mother Grace when she was in her fifties. They express similar feelings of longing, loss and recovery, the pleasure she and I both take in the landscape, and the way earlier memories resurface unexpectedly as one’s life becomes a spiral.
