The photographs for this book were taken in the Vatican museum during a semester when Nettles taught in a study abroad program. She was struck by the chiseled sculptures and what obviously appeared to be fig leaf afterthoughts.

Text: The fig leaves we see on Greek and Roman torsos were added to them after the Council of Trent and a 1557 edict from Pope Paul IV. Having been added to existing sculptures, they continue to cling to them to this very day.
